Choosing the Right Cable Protector Ramp for Your EV
Share
Running an EV charging cable across a driveway, path, or garage floor is a trip hazard — and a potential source of cable damage if it gets driven over repeatedly. A cable protector ramp solves both problems, but with several sizes and styles available, it's worth knowing what to look for before you buy.
Why you need a cable protector ramp
EV charging cables are thick, heavy, and expensive to replace. Leaving one loose across a driveway exposes it to foot traffic, vehicle tyres, and weather — all of which can damage the insulation over time. A cable ramp keeps the cable in a protected channel, flat to the ground, so people and vehicles can pass over it safely.
They're also a legal consideration: if someone trips over a cable on your property, a ramp demonstrates you've taken reasonable steps to manage the hazard.
Key things to check before buying
1. Cable diameter
This is the most important measurement. EV charging cables typically range from 10mm to 19mm in diameter depending on the cable type and rating. Check your cable's diameter before ordering — most ramps specify a maximum cable diameter in the product listing.
- Standard home charging cables (3-7kW): usually 10–13mm
- Heavier duty or 3-phase cables: up to 19mm
2. Ramp length
Measure the distance the cable needs to cross. Our ramps are available in 1m and 2m lengths, and our aluminium cable channels come in 3m lengths and can be cut to size. For longer runs, multiple sections can be joined end to end.
- 1m ramp: suits a single path crossing or short driveway edge
- 2m ramp: better for wider driveways or paths
- 3m aluminium channel: ideal for permanent installations — can be cut to exact length and fixed into the surface
3. Indoor vs outdoor use
Most rubber ramps are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, but if the cable will be exposed to rain, consider pairing the ramp with a waterproof plug box to protect the connection point at each end. Our kits include both a ramp and a weatherproof ABS box rated to IP54.
4. Vehicle load rating
If cars will be driving over the ramp, check it's rated for vehicle use. Our rubber ramps are heavy-duty and designed for driveway use. The aluminium channel is better suited to pedestrian areas or fixed installations where vehicles won't cross directly.
5. Visibility
High-visibility yellow markings help people see the ramp and avoid trips. Our rubber ramps feature a yellow centre stripe, and we also stock reflective yellow/black safety tape for marking the edges of charging bays or cable runs.
